Science Lab Equipment

In 2008 R.A. Long chemistry and physics teacher Mr. John Tietjen approached the Board regarding his desire to procure a number of Venier LabQuest hand-held computer devices for advanced science students at R.A. Long. The R.A. Long Class of 2008 had already donated several Vernier LabQuest devices. Mr. Tietjen wanted to obtain 14 of the data collection and analysis tools (one for each lab station).

Lumberjack Log Restart

The Alumni Association has arranged with the Lumberjack Log advisor, Mike Fajardo (RAL Class of '86), to host issues of the Lumberjack Log on our web site.

Note: The issues of the Lumberjack Log are stored in Adobe Acrobat format
(Get Adobe Reader). They can be quite large. If you are using a dial-up connection, you might not want to download the files.

"The Dream" Restoration

One of the early projects completed by the Association was the restoration of "The Dream" painting. The painting is displayed in the library. Over the years, dirt, grime, and poor display techniques resulted in a painting that needed some help. We worked with a fine art conservationist to clean and properly mounting the painting.

R.A. Long Portrait Restoration

One of the early projects completed by the Association was the restoration of R.A. Long's portrait. The portrait is displayed in the library. Over the years, dirt, grime, and poor display techniques resulted in a painting that needed some help. We worked with a fine art conservationist to clean and properly mounting the painting.

Lumberjack Log Restart

The school newspaper has always been an essential part of the high school experience and an essential learning tool for students. R. A. Long High School was no exception with The Lumberjack Log. For a variety of reasons, however, The Lumberjack Log had been discontinued.

In Spring 2005 some students and their teacher, Mike Fajardo (RAL Class of '86), began to consider bringing back the school newspaper. R. A. Long had been without a student-run newspaper, The Lumberjack Log, since 1993.

National Vocation Skills

Jeff Lovie, and his teacher, Chad Gruber, came to the Alumni Association this spring to talk about his success in a Washington State carpentry competition. Jeff did extraordinarily well, first place, and had earned a berth to the national competition. The R. A. Long High School was unable to pay Jeff's travel costs from ASB funds as in years past. Jeff worked very hard with members of the community to raise funds to cover the travel expenses. The Assocation Board agreed to provide a $200.00 grant to help with those expenses.

Gym Floor Logo

Late in the 2004/2005 school year, some pipes broke in the R. A. Long Gymnasium (aka "The Lumberdome") ceiling and destroyed the original gym floor. The school district's insurance carrier paid for most of the costs associated with the replacement of the gym floor. One item that they did not pay for was the logo at center court.

Bench

Several classes and other individuals have presented engraved concrete benches to R. A. Long High School. The Alumni Association decided to present a bench to the school as its first project. This gift was made in Fall 2003.

The benches provide a place for students to wait for transportation to other locations around Longview during the school day, as well as a place to "hang out" during lunch.

R.A. Long Orchestra Bass

In the era of ever tigher school budgets, it is often difficult for the school to buy new equipment or to replace old and worn equipment. This is particularly true in the music program and in especially in the orchestra and band programs. Student families often purchase or rent instruments when the instrument is small. For larger instruments, such as a bass, it is often difficult for students to acquire such instruments.

Projects

The R. A. Long High School Alumni Association undertakes a variety of projects that fulfill our Mission statement. We select projects that are not covered by regular school funds. We also select projects that are not handled by other R. A. Long service organizations (such as the Booster Club, the R. A. Long Foundation, and the ASB).

Suggestions for the projects that we take on come to us from a number of sources:
